What is a VPN? Full explanations for beginners!

A VPN, or Virtual-Private-Network in English, allows you to create a secure connection to another network via the Internet. VPNs can be used to access geographically restricted sites, protect your internet browsing from prying eyes on public networks, and much more ...

The job of the VPN is to route all the traffic on your network to the other connected network, and that’s the advantage - much like accessing local network resources remotely. Most operating systems (iOS, Windows ...) have their own built-in VPN (see a little below for a little tutorial).

What is a VPN and how is it supposed to help me?

To put it simply: a VPN connects your PC, tablet or smartphone to another computer (called a server) somewhere on the internet and allows you to surf the internet using that computer's internet connection. So if that server is physically located in another country, all your internet traffic will appear to be coming from that country, and you may be able to access previously blocked pages.

So why would you need it? Good question ! Here are the most common uses of a VPN:

Bypass geographic restrictions for websites or for Video / audio streaming.

Watch streaming media like Netflix or Hulu without bandwidth restriction.

Protect your personal data when you connect to a public wifi network.

Gain some anonymity online by hiding your real location.

Protect yourself from Torrent software monitoring.

The vast majority of people today use a VPN to download torrents or to bypass the geo-restrictions of an online player or site. They are still very effective in protecting your transfers at work, but this is no longer the primary function of this technology.
